Scour-Critical Bridges in America

Scour — the erosion of a bridge's foundation by flowing water — is the leading cause of bridge failures in the United States. The Federal Highway Administration tracks scour vulnerability for every bridge over water, rating each on a scale from 0 (failed) to 9 (stable). Bridges rated 0 through 3 are classified as scour-critical, meaning their foundations are unstable or at serious risk during flood events.

There are 19,774 scour-critical bridges in the National Bridge Inventory. The table below shows those carrying the most daily traffic — these are the structures where a flood event poses the greatest disruption risk. Many scour-critical bridges have countermeasures installed (riprap, sheet piling) but remain on the watch list until foundations are fully stabilized.

This page includes bridges with NBI scour critical ratings 0 through 3 and ranks them by average daily traffic. Scour-critical status is about foundation vulnerability during water events; it does not automatically mean a bridge is closed or unsafe today.
